An introduction to Electroporation
The stratum corneum is the main barrier for the penetration of active ingredients contained in topical pharmaceuticals and cosmeceuticals. Electroporation increases the permeability of the skin by applying an electrical field across the cell membrane. This increases the permeability of the membranes, allowing active ingredients to be introduced into the cell more effectively.
Application of an electrical field results in a temporary change to the cell membrane which allows deeper penetration to topical products into the cell. Electro-impulses create temporary unstable channels within the cell membrane and therefore allow more of the active ingredients used to enter the cell itself. Its application to the skin has been shown to significantly increase transdermal product delivery. Electroporation can be used alone or in combination with microneedling treatments.
By combining these two techniques you have disruption of the epidermal boundary to enable enhanced penetration through the (usually) impermeable epidermis and the added enhancement of transportation of active ingredients through electroporation. Electroporation is produced by an intermittent current pulsed between 150 to 300ms which opens channels and aquaporines on the cellular membranes, facilitating the transfer of therapeutic active ingredients into the cells.
How does Microneedling and Electroporation work?
Ultra-fine needles penetrate the skin at different depths, creating micro-channels which stimulate a wound healing response. This leads to the production of new collagen and elastin. Once the micro-channels have been created, the Electroporation technology releases electro- stimulating pulses to increase the permeability of the skin cell membrane. This allows for increased absorption of serums applied to the skin, for hydrated, healthy skin.
Microneedling combined with Electroporation significantly increases the amount of serum delivered to the skin compared with traditional Microneedling treatments.
What benefits does Microneedling and Electroporation have for your skin?
Microneedling and Electroporation has several benefits for your skin. The main aim of the treatment is to generate collagen so your skin feels tighter, smoother and softer. After treatment you will see a smoothing of visible fine lines and a reduction in the appearance of pores for fresh, bright, tight, and hydrated skin.
How does Microneedling and Electroporation work for skin rejuvenation?
The treatment employs tiny, medical-grade needles to create micro-channels that stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. Once the micro-channels have been created, the Electroporation technology helps to increase
the permeability of the skin cell membrane. This means the serums applied during treatment will be introduced into the deeper layers of the skin for faster, more effective results.
