Why has my skin suddenly become dry and dehydrated?

As the winter months roll in, a lot of people are noticing that their skin is becoming less hydrated. During the summer months we urge our clients to use a light moisturiser, however this is simply not suitable during the winter months. Why is this? As the weather and changes, our skin can get chapped and dry.

The difference between dry and dehydrated.

Dry skin is a skin type which lacks oil, whereas dehydrated skin is when the top layer of your skin is lacking water. For those of you with dry skin we recommend soothing and calming skincare products, particularly if you have a darker skin tone. For dehydrated skin we strongly recommend you are using a Hyaluronic Acid product which is a moisturising agent. We love the Medik8 Hydr8 B5. Hyaluronic Acid draws water to the top layer of the skin and can hold 1,000 times its weight in water. You should use this after cleansing and then apply a moisturiser on top for longer lasting hydration.

What else can I do?

Limit your bath or shower time to 5-10 minutes. Close the door to lock in humidity and then apply a thicker moisturiser as soon as you can to increase absorption. Think of your moisturiser as your ever changing jacket/coat collection. During the summer months you want something thin and light, whereas in the winter out comes the big thick coat. You should follow this when it comes to your moisturiser. A light one in the summer months and a thicker one in the winter months. You really want to lock in that moisture in the winter or your skin will become chapped and dry. The thicker moisturiser will battle against the cold winds and dry air.
