Here are our top 10 tips on how to reduce your spots and breakouts!

1. Wash your bedding

When we are sleeping, the bacteria from our face is transferring onto our bed sheets. If you are not washing your bedding regularly then you are continuously passing the bacteria from your face to the sheets. The bacteria and oils will start to clog up your pores and cause breakouts. We recommend changing your bedding once a week.

2. Sanitise your devices

Make sure you are carrying antibacterial wipes with you to clean your phone and other devices that you are putting to your face regularly. Again, putting your phone to your face is just passing bacteria from your phone to your face over and over again. If you really want to minimise the transferring of bacteria, use the hands-free speaker mode.

3. Keep your skin moisturised

Many people think that if you have oily skin then you don’t need to moisturise your skin – wrong. When your skin is dry, you naturally start to produce more oil in order to add more moisture to the skin. These oils can then clog your pores which leads to breakouts. To combat this, we recommend the Medik8 Balance Moisturiser as it is light-weight and contains low oil. It will keep your skin moisturised but will control your oil production.

4. Clean your make up brushes

If you are not cleaning your make up brushes, you are creating the perfect breeding ground for bacteria which cause breakouts. Anything that touches your face should be cleaned regularly to prevent this. We would suggest you wash your brushes once a week to reduce spots occurring.

5. Stop touching your face

Not to sound like a broken record, but you are transferring the bacteria from your hands onto your face. Touching different areas of your face means you are also just moving bacteria around your face. If you really can’t resist temptation then make sure you are washing your hands regularly in order to reduce an outbreak of spots.

6. Reduce your dairy consumption

Studies show that the sugars in dairy can contribute to hormonal imbalance and inflammation, which lead to breakouts. Perhaps try almond milk as an alternative if you are able to do so. Did you know that acne and breakouts are less prevalent in Asian communities? Dairy is not part of their average diet.

7. Add a retinol or retinal to your skincare regime

Vitamin A is well known for helping with anti-ageing. Did you know it actually started off as an acne treatment? Vitamin A works by speeding up your cellular turnover which helps with unclogging of pores. We recommend that our clients start with a retinol, however the Crystal Retinal takes it to the next level with its antibacterial properties. It also works 11 times faster than the average retinol.

8. Exfoliating

Exfoliating your skin has some pros and cons. The key is to do it gently as if you are over exfoliating or being. too harsh, you can cause irritation and breakouts. Saying that, removing the dead skin cells so that they don’t clog up your pores is a great idea when done correctly. We would say to use a gentle face wash such as the Medik8 Clarifying Foam. This really is a miracle worker when it comes to targeting acne prone skin and blemishes. It contains mild exfoliating acids such as salicylic acid.

9. ALWAYS remove your make up before bed

No matter how tired you are, you should always remove your make up and cleanse your skin before going to bed. Leaving your make up on while asleep can lead to it being trapped within your pores as well as all of the daily oils and sweat from the day. Remove your make up and allow your skin to breathe at night!

10. Drink water

Your skin will remain hydrated and supple if you are drinking enough water during the day. Another benefit is that it flushes out any toxins. Bad bacteria will be kept at bay and your oil production will be more controlled.
